COURSE DESCRIPTION: The AP Studio Class is a class in which the Student will create A body Of work That will give them College Credit By the college board.

RATIONALE:
AP Studio will be a class where the student Artist will create work dealing with their Concentration, and their work showing The Breadth of their understanding of
The Concepts of Art and the Principles of Design

SUPPLIES AND MATERIALS: Students are responsible for bringing in the following supplies:
v 11x14 inch sketchbook
v Set of drawing pencils (HB – B6)
v Pencil sharpener
v Kneaded eraser

OPTIONAL:
v 2 XXL Black T-Shirts
v A personal Set of Brushes (Not to be shared with others)
v Personal Acrylic or oil Paints (for use in Home work and personal experimentation)

Special Note For this Class:
In your pursuit to create your portfolios do not limit yourself to just the materials found in the classroom. If you have a concept or need that is not available please discuss your plans with Mr. Alvarez and He will try to coordinate with you to make it happen.
Remember this is a college level course and it requires a high degree of dedication and commitment on your part. Many projects will probably need to be worked on outside of class time.
Mr. Alvarez will require you to do a monthly Gallery/Museum walk to broaden your horizons and view the work of contemporary artists in Miami.

LAB FEE: All students are required to pay a $15.00 art fee that will cover the consumption of art materials and supplies.

The Artist’s Statement:

The Student will write (and rewrite) an artist Statement that explains the students Ideas about the creation of their Concentration. The Statement is a tool to create a cohesive body of Work that is strongly related and explores a singular concept.

Curriculum Objectives:

The objective of this course is to build the student’s Personal portfolio. The Students of this course having taken the Prerequisites of Drawing and Painting One, Two, and Idea Generation, have been chosen by a review of Personal work to enter the A.P. 2D Studio Class. Here they will take their experience and skill to create a specific body of work. The Goal of the student is to create works that reflect not only Conceptual mastery but their mastery of the Principles of Design and art . In this process the student will organize their work into three categories. These categories are Concentration, Breadth, and Quality.

Concentration:
In the student’s Concentration the student will create a body of work dealing with a particular subject matter or concept. It is where the student will prove themselves as creative thinkers and problem solvers. The Concentration is creation of a series of Images that deal with a same underlying theme or concept. Through the course of creating the series the student is to experiment and explores the different uses of media and style as best fits the focus of their Concentration and their Artists Statement.

The College Board requires 12 slides of work in this category (Some detail/close-up slides are acceptable)

Breadth:
In the student’s Breadth the student will create a body of work that shows their understanding of the Principles of Design and art, primarily the Issues of Unity and Variety, Rhythm, Balance, Composition, Contrast, Figural Ground Relationships. All these are Skills in the creation of Imagery that will help show mastery of the skills necessary in the creation of art.

The College Board requires 12 slides of work in this category (Some detail/close-up slides are acceptable)

Quality: Striving for Mastery & excellence
Design Involves purposeful decision making about using the elements and principles of art in an integrative way. In 2D design portfolio, you should demonstrate you understanding of design principles as applied to a two dimensional surface. The principles of design can be articulated through the visual elements. Any 2-D process or medium may be submitted, including but not limited to graphic design, digital imaging, photography, collage, fabric design, weaving, illustration, painting, printmaking, etc.

In this section the College Board Requires 5 works of two-dimensional art to be physically sent to them to judge the Quality of the craftsmanship of the Student’s Artwork. These works may consist of works from The Concentration and Breadth But can also be completely non-related pieces.

You are asked to demonstrate quality through carefully selected examples of your work. These works should successfully demonstrate your mastery of design issues. Your mastery of design should be apparent in the composition, concept and execution of your works, weather they are simple or complex.

Weekly Critiques:

The AP Student will participate in A weekly critique of their work in order that they can get feedback from the Teacher and their fellow student artists.

The weekly critique will also aid in the continued striving of the student artist to control the quality of their work. We are artist – we pay attention to how things are made. craftsmanship, originality and mastery of formalist concepts in creating imagery is what we strive to master in the class.

A Note On Sketchbooks:

Sketchbooks are incredibly important in this classroom. Finished sketchbook Pages can be considered for your slides in your final Portfolio. A sketchbook is a place for Organization, Creativity, Imagination and an Artist’s personal notes.
Every Project in the AP course should first be researched and planned out in the sketchbook prior to beginning the work.

Plagiarism:

This course maintains that one of its primary goals is that the student artist must practice artistic integrity. All Images are to be original works created by the student from their own observation or from their original photography. any non cited appropriation of images could be considered Plagiarism and the student may be removed from participation in the AP studio class.
In the case that a student does appropriate another artist Image, be it painting or photography, the student must move past the duplication of the Image and manipulate it to a degree that would constitute a sufficient change from the original work.

First Semester:
First Quarter:
1. Breadth:
a. Unity and Variety
b. Rhythm
2. Concentration:
a. The student will create three works dealing with their Original Concept.

Second Quarter
Breadth:
Balance, Composition
Repetition and Pattern
Concentration:
The student will create three works Dealing with their Original Concept.
Midterm examinations: This will consist of a project to be completed outside of class that will add to their Concentration. And based on an Essay in the form of a written critique

Second Semester:
Third Quarter:
1. Breadth:
a. Emphasis/ Dominance
b. Proportion and Scale
Concentration:
c. The student will create three works Dealing with their Original Concept.
Fourth Quarter:
1. Breadth:
a. Contrast
b. Figural/Ground Relationship.
2. Concentration: The student will create one work Dealing with their Original Concept.

Final Examination will be based on the Students completion of the requirements of the College Board and participation of an end of term Critique.

HOME LEARNING - PROJECTS – CRITIQUES:

Home Learning: Students will be required to produce 3 pages of studies in their sketchbook each week. At the end of each month, students are expected to have completed 10 personal studies and 2 master’s copies.

Projects: Students will be working on multiple projects to scaffold skills.

Critiques: Critiques take a major role in the drawing and painting class. Critique participation is key to the evaluation of student work. Students MUST participate in every critique. Critiques add to the student ability to communicate ideas in the classroom.

LATE OR LOST WORK WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.

CRITIQUES: 20%

A: 90 – 100
B: 80 – 89
C: 70 – 79
D: 60 – 69
F: 59 – 0

CLASS RULES:

v Come to class and get here on time.
v Come to class prepared. Always have your SKETCHBOOK.
v Listen carefully and follow instructions.
v Use safety in the classroom. Be attentive with sharp tools.
v Respect the point of view from other students and the teacher.
v Respect materials and equipment in the classroom.
v Follow the Code of Student Conduct.

DISCIPLINARY PROCEDURES:

v 1st offense – VERBAL WARNING
v 2nd offense – DETENTION
v 3rd offense – Referral to administrator for further disciplinary action.

Detentions are given with the full support of the Administration and will be served. You will be notified in writing if you receive a detention. Your parents will be responsible for making alternate transportation arrangements.
